Operating Partner

As an Operating Partner, Paul is responsible for helping to support Element’s investment strategy in the regulated and non-regulated electric markets, including grid management, demand-side management and demand response, infrastructure, and trading.

Paul is currently the Chairman of the Midwest ISO, which manages all of the transmission lines and dispatches the electric generation in 15 mid-western states and portions of Canada. In addition, the Midwest ISO makes a market to buy and sell wholesale electricity in these same territories.

Paul brings over 25 years of experience in the general management of energy, telecom, software, and technology sectors. He has had P&L responsibility for 5 different companies encompassing energy services companies, software businesses and telecommunications providers. These companies have ranged in size and scope from start-ups to a $4 billion energy trading company.

He spent his early career at AT&T where he advanced through managerial positions in manufacturing, research, sales, marketing, business development and financial planning. He left AT&T in 1995 as the VP Manufacturing of the Consumer Products Division, which had 8,000 employees and $2 billion of annual revenue.

Paul left AT&T to become President of Utilicorp Energy Services. Utilicorp marketed natural gas nationwide to the unregulated retail gas market. In addition, Utilicorp provided energy management services to commercial and industrial end-users for natural gas, electricity and related technical services. In 1997, Paul became President and CEO of Columbia Energy Services. Columbia was an energy trading, risk management and energy marketing company with annual revenue in excess of $4 billion.

In 1999, Paul went on to found GeoUtilities as its Chief Executive Officer. GeoUtilites was a software platform that provided online acquisition opportunities for telecom, energy, security, and a variety of other business services. GeoUtilites was later purchased by AES in 2002 and provided its investors a 100 times cash on cash return.

Paul serves on the board of directors of: the Midwest ISO and TrendIQ. Previous boards on which Paul has served include GeoUtilities, TransLink Transmission, Airak Energy, and The ARC of New Jersey.
